How Does The CoolSculpting Procedure Work?

CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical body contouring treatment that uses a controlled cooling device to freeze and destroy fat cells that are resistant to diet and exercise. These stubborn fatty areas are gently pulled between the applicator’s two cooling panels and held there while the plates drop in temperatures close to freezing, causing the fat cells to harden and crystallize. The process typically takes between 35 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes but the time does vary depending on which areas are being treated and how many cycles you are receiving on the day of treatment.

After the device has been removed, patients will receive a two-minute massage of the targeted area since the crystallized fat has sharp edges that will damage additional fat cells, maximizing results.

The fat freezing sessions are performed in “cycles”. With our multiple applicators we can treat up to 3 areas at once. CoolSculpting is a highly customized treatment and the number of cycles each patient needs will be determined by our specialists during your private consultation.

Which Body Areas Can It Treat Under FDA Clearance?

CoolSculpting® was originally cleared by the FDA in September of 2010 for the flank area, otherwise known as love handles. It is now FDA cleared for fat layer reduction in the abdomen, inner thighs, outer thighs, arms, bra fat and banana rolls. CoolSculpting® Chin is also FDA cleared to help reduce fat in the submental area (double chin).

Why CoolSculpting®?

The primary benefit of CoolSculpting® is that it’s a non-invasive fat reduction treatment. Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting® doesn’t require any needles, surgery or prolonged downtime. In fact, patients can return to their normal daily activities after treatment, including exercise.

In addition to being non-invasive, it’s also a relatively quick treatment and typically takes only one or two hours (depending on the number of cycles) , after which patients can return to their normal routine. While some patients report mild discomfort, the treatment is typically pain free and many read, work or watch TV during their session.

Read FAQs
  • What are the Risks of CoolSculpting®?

While CoolSculpting® has been approved by the FDA for reducing fat, there are some risks, as there are with any cosmetic procedure. The most common side effects patients experience are redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and mild discomfort. These symptoms typically subside within 1-3 weeks.

  • Am I a good candidate for CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® is designed to treat stubborn pockets of fat, not to be used as a weight loss treatment, so it’s not ideal for a patient who is looking to achieve significant weight loss. The best candidates are those who are at or near a healthy weight but have pockets of stubborn fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Since the body sculpting treatment involves pulling pockets of fat between two cooling plates, it works best if the area you are targeting can be easily grasped with your hand.

  • How much does CoolSculpting® cost?

The cost varies depending on the area you are targeting, the number of sessions you will need, and your specific goals. We work with each patient to create a customized plan to meet their specific needs.

  • How long does each treatment take? How many will I need?

Like the cost, the time each session takes will vary depending on the area being treated, so each patient’s treatment plan is customized for them. That said a single cycle generally takes about 70 minutes.

  • What does it feel like?

Because CoolSculpting® works by freezing fat cells, the procedure itself acts as its own effective anesthetic, numbing the treatment area within about 10 minutes into the treatment. Most patients describe the feeling of pulling fat into the cooling device as “strange,” although some do experience mild discomfort.

After the device has been removed and the area is still firm, the patient will receive a two-minute massage that some patients find mildly uncomfortable. However, this step is necessary since the crystallized fat has sharp edges that will damage additional fat cells surrounding the targeted area.

  • Are the results permanent?

After the fat cells are frozen, your body eliminates these dead cells through its own natural repairing process. Once these fat cells have been eliminated they are permanently gone. However, weight gain will prevent you from seeing optimal results.

  • What happens if I gain weight later?

The best candidates for body contouring are already maintaining a steady weight. However, if you do gain weight after your procedure you should gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the area that was treated.

  • Is CoolSculpting® safe?

Not only is CoolSculpting® FDA-approved for reducing pockets of stubborn fat, with over three million procedures performed around the world, it’s proven to be both a safe and effective treatment.

  • Are there any side effects?

While some patients report mild discomfort during the procedure, the most common side effects are after the procedure and include numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain. On rare occasions, some patients experience significant pain following the procedure. All of these symptoms typically go away on their own within 1-3 weeks. You should not receive this treatment if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria.

  • How soon can I return to my normal routine?

Immediately after your treatment! Since the procedure is completely non-invasive and doesn’t even require an anesthetic, you should be able to return to your normal routine immediately, including work and exercise.

  • How soon will I see results?

Because your body has to flush out the dead fat cells, you won’t see results instantaneously. However, you will start to see changes in as soon as three weeks and should see the most noticeable results after three months.

  • Do I need to take any supplements or follow a particular diet and exercise program?

No supplements or diet and exercise program are required. However, the patients that see the best long term results are the ones who embrace a healthy lifestyle and maintain a consistent weight.
